One of the many ways to take care of our environment is to follow the “Rs”. Most people have probably heard about the “three Rs”, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle; however, the three Rs have been expanded to include a few more. Now have Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Redesign, Repurpose, Re-earth (compost), and Recycle.
In this article, I discuss Repurposing, with a real-world example. In 2019, after reaching a major company milestone, KnowBe4 celebrated by flying an airplane banner around the city. The next year, at the beginning of 2020, KnowBe4 reached another giant milestone and hung a large celebratory sign on one of our buildings in downtown Clearwater, Florida.
In the spirit of taking extreme ownership for our environment, we took the sign and the banner, and rather than throwing them away, we repurposed them into reusable shopping bags for each of our employees.
By doing so, we diverted 334 pounds of trash from the landfill, which contributed towards our zero waste goals. At the same time, we are helping eliminate the use of plastic grocery bags by creating high-quality, reusable bags and putting them in the hands of all Knowsters. Not to mention each of our employees got their own little piece of KnowBe4 history. Plus, we got to support a small business by hiring a local seamstress to make all the bags for us.
Repurposing projects are not always obvious, but they are almost always worth it. At KnowBe4, environmental responsibility is not just our company stance, it’s our culture; it is who we are.
